BIDE 2020


Virtual international conference on bioinspired design and engineering, BIDE 2020, organized by the School of Biosciences and Technology (SBST), VIT, Vellore in association with the Society for Biological Engineering (SBE-VIT). Biomimicry and bioinspired design field is very vast. In BIDE 2020 we are narrowing our window on cutting edge research work ongoing in the field. The conference brings in national and international personalities from academia, national laboratories, industries and organizations and are actively working in the field of bioinspired design, biomimetic engineering and biomimicry. The conference will be in a webinar-like format, whereby the speakers as well as the participants will join and interact in every session through web-based platforms from their respective homes or offices. All invited talks, special lectures by experts and e-poster presentations by participants will occur electronically through the web. Although virtually, BIDE 2020 provide will provide a unique opportunity to understand and develop new concepts of cutting edge bioinspired design.





Prashant Dhawan 

TOPIC: Biomimicry and its application in Product development
Prashant Dhawan is the Director and Co-founder of the Biomimicry India Network. He holds a degree in MS (Master of Science) in Biomimicry from the Arizona State University, USA along with Biomimicry Professional Certification awarded by Biomimicry 3.8, USA. He also holds a degree in Architecture from SPA Delhi and an MBA from ISB Hyderabad. Mr. Prashant and his wife Seema have been instrumental in spreading awareness and promoting the adoption of Biomimicry in academic institutions in India and have recently helped create a Biomimicry Lab at the Srishti Institute of art, design and technology and have also co-founded the Biomimicry India Network. They have conducted various talks and workshops about Biomimicry in various educational institutions in India and also in China.







Dr. Nikolay Bogatyrev


TOPIC: BioTRIZ and Innovations heuristics

Dr N. Bogatyrev is a broadly qualified scientist working in the field of Biomimetics (bio-inspired engineering), biology and Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ). He sold 28 patents and published more than 100 scientific papers. Nikolay has a Ph.D. in Biology, but he is mostly interested in an engineering approach and ecologically sound sustainable architecture and design. His publications are ranging from popular science papers to research articles and books on bio-inspired engineering, designing a sustainable ecological environment and wildlife conservation. Nikolay Bogatyrev developed a set of rules for sustainable eco-engineering and published them in his book “Ecological Engineering of Survival”(2000). Now he runs the consultancy company BioTRIZ. Ltd. to assist businesses and agencies in new product development, problem-solving, and cost reduction.








Dr. Anthony B. Brennan


TOPIC: Sharklet Bioinspired surfaces: design, Mechanisms and Efficacy

Dr. Anthony B. Brennan received his Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from Virginia Tech. He has worked in Coors biomedical company and is a former member of NIH study section Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. He is currently the chair of the board of directors in sharklet technologies. His research interests include bio-interfaces, antifouling, polymer surfaces/modification, polymer networks, micro topographies, and tissue engineering. He has published several research papers on Material science, bio adhesion, antifouling and surface modification as well.






Dr. Savio Sebastian


TOPIC: Bioinspired Actuation Mechanisms

Dr Savio Sebastian received his Ph.D. in Chemical engineering from Imperial College London. He is a retired scientist and Professor of one of the most prestigious colleges of our country, IIT Madras. He worked as a consultant in GE research. He was also a technical assessor for mechanical testing in National Accreditation Board for testing and calibration laboratories (NABL). He has also been the manager for test operations in General Motors R&D and has worked as a scientist in ISRO and GE plastics.






Dr. Jayachandra Bingi

TOPIC: Bio-Inspired Mechanism: Optics and Photonic technology perspective

Dr. Jayachnadra Bingi holds a Ph.D. from IIT Madras in Physics. He specializes in Physics, Optics, and Nanophotonics as well as Bio-inspired design and engineering. He was also a post-doctoral research fellow at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. His professional service achievements include research reviewing journals like Plasmonics (Springer), Optical Materials (Elsevier), Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group) and IEEE photonics journal (IEEE). He also has several journal and conference publications on a wide range of topics revolving around physics along with co-authoring a book on Modified photonic processes in dielectric-plasmonic random media.








Dr. Navin Kumar


TOPIC: Bio-inspired, painless needle technology

Dr. Navin Kumar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Ropar. Prior to joining IIT Ropar, he was working as a Research Scientist at Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey, and the USA. He has completed masters in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur and Ph.D. (Mechanical Engineering) from IIT Delhi.  Dr. Navin Kumar's research interests are related to both theoretical and experimental aspects of mechanics and dynamics of nano, biological and bio materials and structures, Bone Properties Characterization, Biomedical Engineering, Biomechanics, Biomedical Instrumentation, smart structures and materials, fault diagnosis, and condition monitoring. In particular, he is interested in the areas, Biomaterial Characterization like Experimental and simulation of Nano and biomaterials and structures, active vibration control and fault diagnosis. He has several publications and patents on his name. 

Dr. Aditya Kumar

TOPIC: Nano tribology and interfacial Science

Dr. Aditya Kumar is currently an assistant professor at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. He received his Ph.D. in Material Science from the University of Siegen, Germany. He also acquired his postdoc in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The Ohio State University, Ohio. He has over 100 publications on his name and displays expertise in Chemical engineering specifically in the fields of Nanotechnology, Surface Science, Interfacial Science, Nano tribology and Coatings. 







Dr.Bidhan Chandra Pramanik


TOPIC: Mosquito inspired Microneedles and patches


Dr. Bidhan Pramanick has a Ph.D. in MEMS and Microsystems and he is currently an assistant professor at IIT Goa. He is also a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2017-2018) in IIT Kharagpur and a Postdoctoral Research Investigator (2015-2017) in University of California Irvine, CA, and in Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico. His areas of interest include MEMS and Microsystems, Carbon-MEMS, Microfabrication, Nano-energy, Drug delivery, Lab-on-a-CD. He has numerous publications on his name and has received many awards and recognition for his work- MHRD Scholarship Assistantship (2004) and  CSIR SRF (2010) to name a few. He has also been awarded CONACYT Candidate level by the Science and Technology department, Mexico in 2016.

Dr Karthik Chandrasekaran


TOPIC: Bioinspired Metallic Surfaces, for biomedical applications



Dr Karthik Chandrasekaran received his PhD in Inorganic materials chemistry from the University of Vienna, Austria. Having taught in various universities around the globe, he's currently an assistant professor at Naresuan University, Thailand. He has worked on several projects and publications and has keen interest in distinct topics like material characterisation, X ray diffraction, SEM analysis to name a few.





                

Dr. Jayant Khandare           


TOPIC: Bio-inspired antibody-based Onco-Discover Technology: Lab to Clinic

Jayant Khandare received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from National Chem. Lab., Pune, India. His research interests are the interface of macromolecular chemistry, targeted drug delivery, 3D cancer cell scaffolds, and 3D surfaces. He was a senior research scientist, heading Polymer Chemistry Grp., in Drug Discovery Company- Piramal Healthcare Ltd India and has published 45 research papers. His recent research on multicomponent Nanosystems for capturing ‘Circulating Tumor Cells (CTCs)’ has been published in Adv. Healthcare Mat. 2013 as a cover page, inside (Nature India Research Highlight). Dr. Khandare has filed 11 US/PCT patent applications. He has published 2 books on the popularization of science. His research-based start-up, Actorius Innovations and Research (AIR) are involved in designing multi-components for cancer diagnostics. He is also a founder of Right to Research Foundation, a non- profit researcher’s entity in Pune.
